Augustine
attributes his conversion to the prayers and tears of his mother, Saint Monica. After he
was baptized together with his son and several friends in the Cathedral of Milan,
Augustine and Monica were on their way home to Africa where he was resolved to devote his
life to God. While near Rome awaiting the ship, Monica took ill and died. She confessed to
her son that now that she had seen him a Catholic Christian there was no longer anything
on this earth that held importance for her. Monica is a great model of perseverance in
prayer and a special patroness for parents of wayward children. |
