SONUS Concert

SONUS will perform for one night only at the National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia as part of their national tour, featuring the compositions by Whitacre, Arneson, Tavener, Gjeilo, and more. Enjoy an unparalleled evening of modern classical music in the exquisite atmosphere of one of Philadelphia's most beautiful churches.

$10 suggested donation.
Tickets available at the door, or in advance from the Shrine office.

SONUS is a modern a cappella choir, born from the desire to create beautiful music with excellence and passion, with an emphasis on modern and sacred music. They are dedicated to a collective leadership, working together to create a transcendent experience, not only for the listener, but for the performer. Every member of the choir has input in the shaping of the music, creating a truly beautiful and unified sound. Since its founding in 2014, SONUS has created a unique listening experience, as they sing in an open semi-circle with the conductor singing with them in their midst. This allows a uniquely emotional and dynamic performance, as the separation is removed between choir and conductor. Their specialization of straight-tone singing creates yet another level of musical synergy. There is no vibrato to disrupt the overtones created by pure pitches, so the full color of sound can be heard and felt, making SONUS a rich and deeply moving musical experience.

As children of a loving God, what are we being called to do with our lives, and how can we be more intentional about living them?

Join us for an evening of faith enrichment and reflection,
led by Fr. Jim McBurney, O.S.A.

Upper Shrine Church

The Church gives us 50 days to celebrate Easter, to reflect on the joy and hope of the resurrection and to consider the abundant life Jesus has promised us (John 10:10). How does the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus make a difference in your life? How does the Easter story speak to our individual stories? How has the Risen Lord been present and walked with us in the challenges, opportunities, and stories of our lives? Our Christian tradition is told through the liturgical seasons, in the story of salvation that we tell again and again. In telling the story, we find hope and direction for our life journeys. Come, be renewed, as we seek to know the peace and joy of the risen Lord.

Why Don’t We Forgive: Unburdening the Heart is an evening of learning and discussion led by Fr. Jim Paradis. Together, we will examine our understanding of what forgiveness is, and the things that often stand in its way. Do we ever get past “cheap” forgiveness? Why do we hold on to grudges or keep score? Living in unforgiveness is a gnawing pain. How can we achieve the peace that comes from true forgiveness, and how can this improve our lives?

All are welcome.

In Support of Victims of Sexual Abuse and their Families

Each Friday during Lent, our Stations of the Cross devotion will remember the passion and death of Christ. In a special way, we will also remember those who have been hurt by sexual violence and abuse. As we walk the way of the cross with Jesus, we also walk with our brothers and sisters who carry crosses of their own. Together, we seek healing, understanding, and transformation by the grace of the loving Father, saving Son, and renewing Spirit.

Our All Soul's Novena is one of the most popular Novenas at the Shrine. Please submit the names of your loved ones who have passed away, and the Shrine community will pray for the peaceful repose of their soul's. Through the powerful intercession of Saint Nicholas of Tolentine, patron saint of souls, may they come to rest in the presence of our Eternal Father.

This year's All Soul's Novena gift is a small booklet about Saint Augustine of Hippo. It contains the story of his life and conversion, as well as a number of prayers taken from his writings that can be used for daily devotion.

Saint Augustine of Hippo booklets are available for purchase in our Gift Shop, or by calling our offices at 215.546.8333. Call us if you would like to be added to our Novena mailing list.

Click 'CC' for English subtitles.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Friar Vincenzo who shared a wonderful information about Saint Nicholas of Tolentine with us and Silvia Fialho who helped us with the Italian-English interpretations during our visit to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino in Italy.

Children's Novena (NEW)

  • National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia (map)

Our Children's Novena is a time to remember the youngest of the faithful!

As a mother herself, Saint Rita is often an intercessor for parents of beloved children. This new Novena, which begins around the same time that children head back to school, will remember our youngest members.

Each Novena participant receives a prayer card that features a beautiful picture of Saint Rita in glory, as depicted in one of our Upper Shrine stain glass windows. The back has an easy-to-learn and easy-to-teach Child's Prayer to Saint Rita, to help young Catholics begin to understand the power of having a heavenly intercessor!

We encourage you to take this opportunity to submit the names of the children you love that you would like us to keep in our prayers. We also encourage you to sit down with your children and grandchildren and find out what their prayers are - our community of faith will lift up their young prayers, as well!

Contact the office at 215.546.8333 and talk to Katherine or Kelsey if you would like to be put on our Novena Mailing List or if you would like to order our special Children's Novena Holy Card. Or, visit our Children's Novena Page to submit your intentions online.

Rita Children Prayer Card.jpg

Oh Saint Rita, my dear friend,
Lean to earth, your help to lend.
Take my hope, my prayer, my need
to Heaven's court, to intercede.
And let God know of my great love
for Him and all the saints above,
and ask if He would hear my prayer
entrusted to your tender care.

Amen.
