Join us for an evening of faith enrichment and reflection,
led by Fr. Jim McBurney, O.S.A.

Upper Shrine Church

The Church gives us 50 days to celebrate Easter, to reflect on the joy and hope of the resurrection and to consider the abundant life Jesus has promised us (John 10:10). How does the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus make a difference in your life? How does the Easter story speak to our individual stories? How has the Risen Lord been present and walked with us in the challenges, opportunities, and stories of our lives? Our Christian tradition is told through the liturgical seasons, in the story of salvation that we tell again and again. In telling the story, we find hope and direction for our life journeys. Come, be renewed, as we seek to know the peace and joy of the risen Lord.

An evening reflection led by Br. Bill Gabriel, O.S.A in the Lower Shrine Chapel. It offers us a chance to explore personal purpose and meaning that we often ask ourselves at many crossroads and major life events. As children of a loving God, what are we being called to do with our lives, and how can we be more intentional about living them?

The death of the Lord our God should not be a cause of shame for us; rather, it should be our greatest hope, our greatest glory. In taking upon himself the death that he found in us, he has most faithfully promised to give us life in him, such as we cannot have of ourselves.

Why Don’t We Forgive: Unburdening the Heart is an evening of learning and discussion led by Fr. Jim Paradis. Together, we will examine our understanding of what forgiveness is, and the things that often stand in its way. Do we ever get past “cheap” forgiveness? Why do we hold on to grudges or keep score? Living in unforgiveness is a gnawing pain. How can we achieve the peace that comes from true forgiveness, and how can this improve our lives?

Saint Augustine of Hippo booklets are available for purchase in our Gift Shop, or by calling our offices at 215.546.8333. Call us if you would like to be added to our Novena mailing list.

Children's Novena (NEW)

  • National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia (map)

Our Children's Novena is a time to remember the youngest of the faithful!

As a mother herself, Saint Rita is often an intercessor for parents of beloved children. This new Novena, which begins around the same time that children head back to school, will remember our youngest members.

Each Novena participant receives a prayer card that features a beautiful picture of Saint Rita in glory, as depicted in one of our Upper Shrine stain glass windows. The back has an easy-to-learn and easy-to-teach Child's Prayer to Saint Rita, to help young Catholics begin to understand the power of having a heavenly intercessor!

We encourage you to take this opportunity to submit the names of the children you love that you would like us to keep in our prayers. We also encourage you to sit down with your children and grandchildren and find out what their prayers are - our community of faith will lift up their young prayers, as well!

Contact the office at 215.546.8333 and talk to Katherine or Kelsey if you would like to be put on our Novena Mailing List or if you would like to order our special Children's Novena Holy Card. Or, visit our Children's Novena Page to submit your intentions online.

Rita Children Prayer Card.jpg

Oh Saint Rita, my dear friend,
Lean to earth, your help to lend.
Take my hope, my prayer, my need
to Heaven's court, to intercede.
And let God know of my great love
for Him and all the saints above,
and ask if He would hear my prayer
entrusted to your tender care.

Amen.

The Call to Conversion of Heart

Fr. Jim McBurney will lead an evening of reflection on the topic The Call to Conversion of Heart, as we begin our Lenten Journey, rediscovering and renewing our faith as a people baptized in Christ Jesus. The talk will be followed by 7:00 pm Mass and the Novena to Saint Rita.

nicodemus-visiting-jesus-1899.jpg!Large.jpg

On receiving ashes at the beginning of Lent, we hear the words:  “Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return.”  The Church invites us during the season of Lent to remember who we are as people baptized in Christ Jesus, redeemed through His suffering, death and resurrection.  It is a time to hear once again the call to conversion of heart.

The refrain of an old Lenten hymn captures well for us the Lenten journey: “Grant to us, O Lord, a heart renewed; recreate in us your own spirit, Lord.” In what way does your heart seek to be renewed?  Come away for this time and be renewed in spirit.

Untitled-2.jpg

This is a free event and is open to all who seek renewal this Lenten season.
