For centuries, artists have depicted the Mother of God. During this hour-long presentation, you'll learn the language of artists, what inspired and influenced their portrayals of the Virgin Mother.

This presentation is entitled: Hail, Mary: a journey through representation of the Blessed Mother in art and history. It is composed of beautiful imagery, art history, Catholic history, opportunities for prayer and reflection, and music.

The presentation will take place at 7:00pm in the Lower Shrine chapel, after a short musical prelude around 6:45pm.

The Call to Conversion of Heart

Fr. Jim McBurney will lead an evening of reflection on the topic The Call to Conversion of Heart, as we begin our Lenten Journey, rediscovering and renewing our faith as a people baptized in Christ Jesus. The talk will be followed by 7:00 pm Mass and the Novena to Saint Rita.

nicodemus-visiting-jesus-1899.jpg!Large.jpg

On receiving ashes at the beginning of Lent, we hear the words:  “Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return.”  The Church invites us during the season of Lent to remember who we are as people baptized in Christ Jesus, redeemed through His suffering, death and resurrection.  It is a time to hear once again the call to conversion of heart.

The refrain of an old Lenten hymn captures well for us the Lenten journey: “Grant to us, O Lord, a heart renewed; recreate in us your own spirit, Lord.” In what way does your heart seek to be renewed?  Come away for this time and be renewed in spirit.

Untitled-2.jpg

This is a free event and is open to all who seek renewal this Lenten season.

Holy Day of Obligation

This liturgical feast day recalls God’s action from the very beginning of the history of humankind. After the sin of Adam and Eve, God did not wish to leave humanity alone in the throes of evil. And so he turned his gaze to Mary, holy and immaculate in love (cf.Eph 1:4), choosing her to be the Mother of humanity’s Redeemer. When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of mercy. Mercy will always be greater than any sin, and no one can place limits on the love of God who is ever ready to forgive.  (The Proclamation of the Jubilee Year of Mercy by Pope Francis)

An Advent Evening with The Augustinians

Join us at St. Rita's for an evening of reflection, prayer, and Sacrament as we prepare for the season of Christmas.

Gabriel, God's messenger, carried an important message to Mary over 2,000 years ago. And Mary, in her obedience, strength, and purity, willingly accepted the message he brought. Join our Augustinian friars for an hour of led reflection and prayer on the miracle of that message, and the way in which it was received.

We will begin at 6:00 pm with the guided reflection, and will celebrate evening Mass at 7:00 pm.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 6-7 pm.

2017 FRANCE PILGRIMAGE

LOURDES - PARIS - LYON

Friday, 6 October – Sunday, 15 October
Depart and Return Place: New York (JFK International Airport)

Spiritual Director:  Fr. James Spenard, OSA

Saint Rita Shrine announces a pilgrimage honoring Mary, visiting Lourdes, Nevers, Lisieux, Paris, La Salette, and Lyon. Take this opportunity to learn more about the miraculous holy water in Lourdes, followed by the Footsteps of Saint Bernadette tour, a history of Notre Dame Cathedral and Chapel of the Miraculous Medal in Paris. We will also hear about the life of Saint Therese of Lisieux (the Little Flower), venerate the relics of Saint John Vianney and hear accounts about the Our Lady’s apparition at La Salette.

Our-Lady-of-LaSalette 01.jpg

THE APPARITION OF OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE IN FRANCE

On September 19, 1846, two children spoke of having met a “Beautiful Lady” in the countryside where their cows were grazing, above the village of La Salette. Maximin Giraud was 11 and Melanie Calvat was 14.

At first seated and weeping, the ‘Beautiful Lady’ stood up and, in French and in the local dialect, she spoke to them for a long time about her Son, drawing examples from their own lives.

She gave them a Message and told them to see that it was passed on to all of her people.

The light in which she was bathed and which enfolded all three of them came from a large crucifix which she wore upon her breast, and which bore a hammer and pliers on its crossbar. She bore a heavy chainupon her shoulders and, and alongside the chain, roses. Her head, her body and her feet were outlined by roses. Then the “Beautiful Lady” moved up a short, steep rise and disappeared into the light.

On September 19, 1851, after a long and rigorous enquiry, Msgr. Philibert de Bruillard, the Bishop of Grenoble, declared in a celebrated mandate that the “apparition of the Blessed Virgin to two shepherds on the mountain of La Salette… had all of the characteristics of truth and that the faithful had good grounds to believe it, accepting it as certain beyond doubt.”

In 1855, Msgr. Ginoulhiac, Bishop of Grenoble, after a new enquiry, confirmed the decision of his predecessor by declaring: “The task of the shepherds is complete; that of the Church begins.”
