We invite you to the National Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia to experience the peace and serenity modeled by our remarkable Saint Rita, a woman whose faith empowered her to overcome the horror of a murdered husband and the tragic death of her sons. Her belief sustained her as a wife, mother, widow, and nun, helping her meet every challenge with firm trust in God's will.

A note from our Director

Giving Shrine tours is one of my favorite aspects of our ministry here. I share the story of Saint Rita's life, which is remarkably accessible even though she lived centuries ago. I love to tell the stories of her miracles and her great trust in God. Her faith sustained her through many hardships.

I also delight in decoding this beautiful church and shrine for visitors! The peace and beauty is readily apparent, but it's fun to point out overlooked details, to explain the Catholic symbolism in our statues and murals, and to share stories of familiar and unfamiliar saints.

Because God's faithful people are so varied, I try hard to customize each tour in the moment for whoever is visiting - whether you're a family from Nebraska with four teenagers and three adults, a class of 5th graders on a field trip, or a Rosary Prayer Group from the suburbs of Atlanta, it's important to me that we find connection points between your faith experience and Saint Rita's.

Come and visit. Let's crack the iconography code of the saint statues, or learn what stories the historians got wrong. Let's marvel at the story of Saint Rita's life and see how she can set an example for us, today. Come be part of our community of faith. Come ask for Saint Rita's powerful intercession. Come and see.

-Chesley Turner, Shrine Director

Dear devoted pilgrims,

The saint of Cascia is at one and the same time the ‘strong woman’ and the ‘wise virgin’ presented to us by Holy Scripture who, in every state of life, indicates - and not just in words - what is the authentic way to sanctity as a faithful follower of Christ right up to the cross.

Rita offers her rose to each of you: in receiving it spiritually, strive to live as witnesses to a hope that never disappoints and as missionaries of a life that conquers death. Let it symbolize a life sustained by passionate love for the Lord Jesus, a life capable of responding to suffering and to thorns with forgiveness and the total gift of self, in order to spread everywhere the good odor of Christ through a consistently lived proclamation of the Gospel.
— Pope St. John Paul II
