Congratulations, Fr. Joseph Farrell, O.S.A.!

Congratulations to Fr. Joseph Farrell, O.S.A., the Augustinian’s new Superior General!

Fr. Joe is an Augustinian Friar from our Province and has been serving in Rome as the Vicar General (second in command) since 2013. A native of Drexel Hill, Fr. Joe graduated from Villanova University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1985, and entered the Province’s Pre-Novitiate program the same year. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1991. His first assignment was at Saint Augustine Parish in Andover, MA, (1991–1994), followed by an appointment as chaplain at Monsignor Bonner High School (1994–1996), and was then assigned as Campus Minister at Merrimack College (1996–2003).

In 2003, he was assigned to Collegio Santa Monica in Rome and enrolled as a student at the Gregorian University where he received a License in Sacred Theology (STL) in 2005 and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD) in 2007 concentrating in Augustinian Spirituality. His doctoral work focused on the theme of An Augustinian Spirituality of Accountability in the Sermons of Saint Augustine.

From 2007 to 2013, Fr. Joe served as Associate Vice President of Mission and Ministry and an adjunct professor at Villanova University.

In addition to his stellar, worldwide leadership among the Augustinians over the past 12 years, Fr. Joe has been a great supporter of the Shrine and our unique mission! We join the chorus of Friars and ministries that give thanks to God for Fr. Joe’s priesthood, faithfulness, and leadership! May God bless him and his new role abundantly! Saint Rita, pray for him!
